Magic has messed around in this space many times (threshold, flip cards, level-up, etc.)
Best of all because Draft and Sealed (the most common prerelease formats) only use cards people open in packs at the event you dont have to come with a deck, or worry about some decades-long MTG veteran walking in with a super powerful deck
While the effect is fairly Wizard-y, it's not a blue effect much nowadays
They peaked again several years later for the Artificer's Silver Age, with the great Urza's cycle that unleashed upon our world so many powerful weapons as to echo the ancient times
