Baldwin in 1850, perhaps most of all for the tiny chair, and maybe a little table too, just waiting for this figures arrival at the top of the hill! An unexpected detail, but exactly the right thing to give this drawing a narrative arc, and to place all of our empathy with this hatted figure, cane in one hand and other in his pocket, as he slowly makes his way.
