I've become completely enamored of old handcrafted tools just for the spectacular

but have since learned it was quite the institution--started by Earl Rebman in 1909 (making candy at home for holiday sale) and by 1919 selling Christmas merch from a wheelbarrow in Penn Square

seems not to be this fancified boy but rather the bird perched on his finger--though it seems quite likely there's satire at play here

I was drawn to the black against white graphicness of the hand-painted face on this

I would most definitely stop and head that way

There's rarely a closed box of this sort I don't shake to see if there might be something (like kindergarten blocks!) inside, which was wise in this case or I might never have known there were four more boxes, of perfectly graduated scales, housed within it. (With subtly graduated patinas to the wood, too, the smallest looking as though it had never seen the light of day since its construction in 1892! Signed ASW,
